TSNs Jack Armstrong offers his thoughts on Thunder GM Sam Presti, The Eastern and Western Conference finals, the firing of Vinny Del Negro in Los Angeles and Mike Krzyzewski returning to Team USA. 1. Sam Presti (Thunder GM): As I watch the first two games of the Memphis-San Antonio series, I keep telling myself that neither team is better than the Thunder if James Harden is still there this season, even if Russell Westbrook is injured for the Playoffs. The Thunder would win the West with Durant and Harden in my opinion. Look at Thursdays announcement of the All NBA Teams, Kevin Durant along with Westbrook and Harden were selected to the Teams. OKC has three of the top 15 players in the league. As a GM, you to hold onto them as LONG as you possibly can and if you need to do a salary dump for luxury tax/cap purposes you do it after you give this thing as much of a chance to win a title. You owe it to your fans. With all due respect to Kevin Martin, he isnt even close to James Harden and we saw it in the Memphis series. Martin is a nice player but not a difference maker. Harden was a restricted free agent at the end of this season. The Thunder should have played it out for this season and maybe even another year/two to give themselves more time to win it. Instead they jump the gun and miss an opportunity. Has the window shut in OKC? No way, but when I look at a guy like Kendrick Perkins I shake my head because he looks like a guy thats aged a bunch in the past 18 months. You dont get many chances in a market like OKC, so you must capitalize. Sometimes folks Over-Think issues, which I think Presti did. 2. Memphis vs. San Antonio: The Grizzlies have to win four of the next five games to get to the NBA Finals, and I think they can do it. Will they? Not likely but it wouldnt shock me. I look at the Grizzlies and the whole key is going to be taking care of the ball and slowing the pace of play down considerably. Memphis needs to get into the power-game mode with points in the paint and rebound differential. The Spurs are one of those team that if you can take away transition and guard the three-point line you give yourself a chance. The Mike Conley-Tony Parker match-up will still prove to be a huge factor. The Grizzlies must keep Parker out of the lane and Conley needs to play at the elite level weve seen from him in the past few months. Its do-able yet not going to be easy. 3. Pacers vs. Heat: Paul George was brilliant late in Game 1 and gave his team chances to win, yet in the defining moment he allowed LeBron James an easy look. I would like to have seen George play sound and make James shoot a contested Jumper. Im sure coach Frank Vogel didnt sleep well last night having his rim protector Roy Hibbert on the bench with him. Was it a mistake? I say yes. You always make a team beat you on the perimeter with a hand in the face. You cant allow an opponent to have a easy shot in the heart of your defense at crunch time. I know match-ups were a concern yet the Heat needed to know by Hibberts presence that youre dictating to them the type of shot theyre going to have to take. Indy looks like they can play with the Heat and they believe they can yet a loss like that is the defining moment. Either the Pacers get by it and prove that theyre truly better or that loss will crush them. 4. Vinny Del Negro (Clippers): He sets a franchise record in wins and loses his Job. The NBA is a great business aint it? Youve got to win in the playoffs. This is the best available job (Brooklyn Nets are the second best) in the NBA right now. The Coach they hire will surely be a guy that will pass Chris Pauls inspection. The Clippers must hold on to Paul in free agency. This hire will set the stage for whether Paul sticks around and if they can take that next step as a franchise. This is a defining moment. 5. Mike Krzyzewski (Duke & Team USA): Stick with what works. Back for the 2016 Olympics. If youre USA GM, Jerry Colangelo you do everything in your power to convince him that he needs to give you one more run. Mission accomplished. Coach K has amazing leadership, coaching and most importantly, people skills. He gets it". Players respect him and play hard for him. Only truly talented coaches can lead the best and get the most out of them. He does it beautifully. Colin Kaepernick Jersey .J. -- Marty Brodeur beat the Pittsburgh Penguins yet again. CINCINNATI -- Instead of starting a final-month surge to the playoffs, the St. Louis Cardinals let one slip away. The Cardinals escaped bases-loaded threats in the seventh and eighth, but couldnt do it again in the ninth. Eugenio Suarezs single up the middle sent the Cincinnati Reds to a 3-2 victory on Friday night.St. Louis is in position to get the NLs second wild card behind San Francisco. Instead of moving up, the Cardinals helped the Reds rally and end a four-game losing streak.Seung Hwan Oh (4-3) walked Zack Cozart on four pitches to open the ninth, putting the potential winning run on base. The closers control was off from the start.Especially in a tie situation, you dont want to give the leadoff hitter a walk, he said through a translator.Brandon Phillips followed with a single. After Scott Schebler singled one out later to load the bases, Suarez got his first career game-ending hit.The Reds had loaded the bases the two previous innings, but failed to score as Matt Bowman and Kevin Siegrist escaped the threats to keep it tied at 2.We kept getting in trouble, manager Mike Matheny said. When youre going to load the bases in the seventh, eighth and ninth of a tie game, its hard to get out of that.Raisel Iglesias (1-1) gave up a walk in the ninth.Yadier Molina and Randal Grichuk connected for an early lead off Anthony DeSclafani, who has been tough against St. Louis during his career. He connected in the second inning for his sixth homer.Grichuk led off the fifth inning with his 20th homer, extending his big week. He had a game-tying homer and a game-winning single earlier in the week. The Reds tied it in the sixth against Alex Reyes, who made his second major league start. Cozart singled, ending his 0-for-17 skid. Phillips followed with a double that ricocheted off third base. Adam Duvalls sacrifice fly and Scheblers single made it 2-2.I made good pitches, Reyes said. It wasnt that hard of contact. The balls were just well-placed.Reyes allowed only six hits, fanned seven and threw 103 pitches. HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- The congratulatory messages started rolling in long before Jimmie Johnson had finished his obligatory championship photos. Larry Bird. Mia Hamm. Michael Phelps. Mario Andretti. Drew Brees. The Chicago Cubs. The list of dignitaries -- and the friends and neighbors who toilet-papered his North Carolina home overnight -- shows just how significant this latest milestone is for Johnson.Greatest of all time? Maybe. He certainly deserves to be in the conversation.Johnson joined Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt as the only drivers in NASCAR to win seven titles with a race-winning run Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. His record-tying championship came in a bizarre year for Johnson and his Hendrick Motorsports team, and on a day that did not belong to the iconic No. 48 Chevrolet until the final lap of the race.Hendrick Motorsports was not good this year, and never found the speed to match Joe Gibbs Racing and its fleet of Toyotas. Johnson, for most of the season, was never even mentioned as a title contender. The organization buckled down, improved its cars and got Johnson in position to race for his seventh title. Then he did the rest. When Carl Edwards wrecked Sunday night to essentially lose the championship, Johnson charged through the melee and found himself suddenly leading the two remaining title contenders. On a night when hed started last -- his team was found to have manipulated the body of his car after it had passed inspection -- and clearly wasnt as good as the other three contenders, he had somehow lucked into the lead.He still had to earn the win, though, and did it with the restart of his life to hold off Kyle Busch and Joey Logano. He led one lap and it was the one that mattered. He is probably the most underrated champion in this sport, said his crew chief, Chad Knaus. He is a fantastic, fantastic individual, an amazing race car driver. Most people in the situation we were in just in would crumble. He didnt even waver. He knew what he needed to do. He knew what the demands were on him at that point in time, and he made it happen.Weve got a great team. Weve got a great owner. Weve got a great everything at Hendrick Motorsports. But the fact of the matter is the real spark in this whole thing is Jimmie.A fatigue perhaps set in when Johnson reeled off five consecutive titles. Fans didnt seem to appreciate his dominance, certainly not the way they revered Petty or Earnhardt.Almost each Johnson championship was met with a collective yawn, when they should have been celebrated for their unique achievement.Johnson, at 41, is the youngest driver to win seven. Petty was 42 when he did it in 1979, while Earnhardt was 43 in 1994. He also collected his seven titles in a 10-year span. Earnhardt needed 14 years to do it, while Petty did it in 15 seasons.Johnsons 80 career victories rank seventh all time, one spot ahead of Earnhardt.I think the five in a row was pretty phenomenal, and I think winning seven and tying seven is pretty special, said team owner Rick Hendrick. Its special to see him tie those guys. I think its good for the sport, and I think it draws a lot of attention to our sport. We had Gatorade, had a lot of guys like Peyton Manning telling him how neat it was, and Serena Williams. I think its going to be a big shot in the arm for not only Jimmie but our sport.Johnson will likely add to his totals. With retirement still a ways off, he has a chance to win eight titles, and as he drank a beer and ate a slice of cold pizza in a champagne-soaked firesuit, he was already being asked about the possibility of eight.I dont know what the chances are, but lets go, he said. Im so excited to put that in front of myself and the team has a hurdle to get over and an accomplishment to achieve. I had a lot of fun racing for the sixth. This one and the calm nature and the way we went about business and got it done only gives me more confidence for the future.I honestly feel like Im playing with house money. I never aspired to be famous. I never aspired to be a champion. I just wanted to race. I think it makes us really dangerous, and I look forward to the challenge of trying to get number eight.---More AP auto racing: www.racing.ap.org . Cheap Yordano Ventura Jersey . Louis. Cheap Rockets Jerseys .C. -- Kemba Walker and the Charlotte Bobcats got off to a fast start, and the Sacramento Kings were never quite able to catch up. The controversial finish that gave the Sacramento Kings their first victory in five games caused one other aspect of a rare good night to get lost. Dave Joergers new-look starting lineup delivered the better first quarter that Sacramentos first-year coach was looking for.The Oklahoma City Thunder wouldnt mind a similar development on their side. The Kings new, smaller starting five -- center DeMarcus Cousins, guards Darren Collison and Ty Lawson, and forwards Rudy Gay and Matt Barnes -- put up 25 points in the opening quarter, got out on the run and helped the Kings to a 36-point first quarter against Toronto on Sunday. They are expected to get an encore together Wednesday when the Kings (5-9) host the Thunder (8-7) at Golden 1 Center. Its a different look, but were all pros, Gay said. Everybody is capable of doing a lot of things out there. Im not going to say one starting lineup is better than the other, but it worked. So well see how we do in the future. The new look, with center Kosta Koufos on the bench after starting in the frontcourt with Cousins in 12 of Sacramentos first 13 games, seemed to unclog the middle. Lawson had more room to drive the key and kick out a pass, a strength of his game that had been missing. The faster tempo also freed Collison to get in the open floor, and he contributed three assists in the first three minutes en route to nine in 32.The work of the starters became a bit of an oversight after the ending of the Kings 102-99 victory. Official Mike Callahan ruled the game clock didnt start soon enoughh on Torontos final inbounds pass, nullifying a 3-pointer by Terrence Ross that appeared to tie the game.ddddddddddddhe Kings hope to take that break and their new lineup and run with it. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak.Thats the team right there that I saw in the preseason that I got so excited about coaching, Joerger said. A bunch of guys that care about each other and go and play really hard. The Thunder didnt start well Thursday in a 111-109 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, getting outscored 23-6 over the final seven minutes of the opening quarter. That loomed large after a late 10-0 run became a footnote when the Lakers Nick George hit a winning 3-pointer with five seconds left.Oklahoma City has lost six of eight since a 6-1 start and has surrendered an average of 31 points in the opening quarter over its past six contests. The Thunder have allowed at least 100 points in eight consecutive games.Guard Russell Westbrook has put a lot of that blame on himself, even though a case could be made that he has been the NBAs best player so far this season. Westbrook scored 17 of his 34 points in the final quarter against the Lakers and added 13 assists and eight rebounds. He told reporters the Thunders early-game struggles have started with him: I have to come out and be ready to play every night.Westbrook is averaging nearly a triple-double, with 31.8 points, 10.6 assists and 9.6 rebounds. Heading into the second full week of the fantasy football season, its important to not overreact too much to the opening games. One full slate is not enough to establish pure trends yet.Heres what to watch and plan for in Week 2:---TIGHT END TURNAROUNDSGary Barnidge was shut out in Week 1. He should bounce back against the Ravens with Josh McCown taking over at quarterback again. Delanie Walker was held to three catches for 42 yards in the first week, but the Titans should make more of an effort to get him the ball against the Lions. Coby Fleener caught one ball for 6 yards in his Saints debut. He has a better matchup against the Giants this week. Barnidge and Walker should definitely be started, and Fleener has to prove himself with his new team, but this may be the week to do it.---COWBOY UPDez Bryant was held to eight yards on one catch last week, and Ezekiel Elliott ran for just 51 yards. Look for both Dallas playmakers to rise in Week 2 against the rival Redskins. Dak Prescott will make a strong effort to get the ball to Bryant often, as the offense may open up a bit more this week. Elliott is a key if the Cowboys want to control the clock, and he should get a lot of usage to balance the offense and take some pressure off Prescott.---MINNESOTA FLATSAdrian Peterson was very disappointing in the first week, as he rushed for 31 yards on 19 carries. Now, owners who drafted him in the first round are quite concerned. His Week 2 outing against Green Bay will be a pivotal performance. Peterson is likely going to be fired up to show that his clunker against the Titans was just a fluke. In a rivalry game against the Packers, with Sam Bradford likely taking over controls of the offense, Peterson should display his better form. Keep the faith and expect a strong statement that he is still not close to being done.---HIGH FLYING BIRDSCarson Wentz led a seemingly explosive offensive attack in a Week 1 opener against the Browns. Now the Eagles have another good matchup at Chicago, but this is the first road start for the rookie, and he is expected be without tight end Zach Ertz. Look for Philadelphia to rely heavily on Ryan Mathews, who is a good start as a second running back, and Jordan Matthews will be peppered with a lot of targets. If Wentz can pass his first road test, the Eagles may be a better fantasy resource than projected in the preseason.---POWER OUTAGEWithout Keenan Allen, the Chargers offense becomes less dynamic. Travis Benjamin may now be overmatched as the potential No. 1 wideout, and Tyrell Williams must prove himself before he cracks your lineup. Philip Rivers now becomes much less of a sure thing as a top-12 quarterback. But Danny Woodhead should get a lot of additional work in the passing game and Antonio Gates can bounce back from a quiet opener as the Bolts host the Jaguars this week. Dont start any of the San Diego WRs, but Woodhead and Gates should be in point-per-reception lineups, and Melvin Gordon deserves some flex consideration after a good opener.---HURTING `HAWKSThe Seahawks frustrated fantasy owners in Week 1, scoring only 12 points against Miami in what seemed to be a very good matchup for their passing game. Russell Wilson suffered an ankle injury, and Tyler Lockett dropped a pair of passes. Wilson is ready to go for Sundays matchup, but it wont be an easy assignment for him, although its hard to bench him if you drafted him as your starter. The Rams have a strong defensive line and always give the Seahawks fits no matter where they are in the standings. The Seattle offense may be erratic in what could be a close and low-scoring NFC West matchup. Thomas Rawls has regained the starting RB job, though, and is worth a start as a second running back. Hope for a respectable outing from Wilson and for Lockett to boost his totals with some yardage after the catch.---HIGH-SCORING SAINTSNew Orleans exploded for 34 points in its season opener, led by 424 passing yards and four TD passes by Drew Brees. But they also allowed 35 points, and the Giants offense appears poised to hurt the Saints defense this week. Eli Manning could be headed for three TD passes or more, and even his secondary targets, such as promising rookie Sterling Shepard, and Victor Cruz on the comeback trail, are worthy of starting consideration. Rashad Jennings could finish off a TD drive or two. The New York defense has improved, so dont expect Brees and co. to roll quite as easily as they did against the Raiders.---DENVER DILEMMAThe Colts legitimately looked like they had the worst defense in the league last week against the Lions. But how much advantage can the Broncos take of the matchup this week? Demaryius Thomas has a hip issue that may prevent him from fully exploiting the Indianapolis secondary, and the teams only true playmaker in the passing game besides Thomas is Emmanuel Sanders. Thomas is likely to be a game-time decision and is a risky fantasy start despite the friendly matchup. The Broncos play in a late game Sunday and there will be safer alternatives in the earlier games. Sanders is a must-start as a third wide receiver, though, and C.J. Anderson is a great daily play. The Broncos may lack the firepower to make the best of the situation if Thomas is not himself, and their defense may get overworked against Andrew Luck as well. Do not bench Luck despite the fact that he faces Denver.---This column was provided to The Associated Press by the Fantasy Sports Network, http://FNTSY.com. Yvon Labre Jersey . KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- In the aftermath of a lopsided loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, in primetime no less, Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith acknowledged that you own this right now, you wear it and it stinks. The Chiefs will smell for quite a while.Their embarrassing 43-14 loss on Sunday night left them 2-2 through their first four games, and with more questions than answers heading into a week off.Their offense was inept, their defense was fileted by Ben Roethlisberger and Co., and even their usually solid special teams were a stumbling mess.Youd love to go into it on a better note, Smith said of the bye, but who knows? Whether we like it or not, its here. We have to use it. Get healthy, regroup and bounce back from this. Here are the grimy details from the Chiefs worst loss under Andy Reid:- They lost two turnovers, both of which turned into touchdowns. One was coughed up by suddenly fumble-prone Spencer Ware and the other was an interception on a screen pass flawed from the start.- Smith was sacked four times by a Steelers defense that had just one through the first three games.- Dustin Colquitt shanked a punt that gave the Steelers great field position, and Tyreek Hills punt return touchdown was wiped out by an illegal blocking penalty by Demetrius Harris.- One week after picking off six passes and forcing eight turnovers against the Jets, the Chiefs didnt force a single turnover against the Steelers. Roethlisberger was 22 of 27 for 300 yards and five scores, and LeVeon Bell ran for 144 yards in his return from a three-game suspension. You learn a lot about yourself when you get your butt kicked, Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson said. The best thing about it is it counts as one game. It does not put a damper on the season, and it does not set us into panic mode. Do we need to figure it out? Yes we need to figure it out.The onus on that falls on Reids shoulders.Long recognized as an ooffensive mastermind, Reid has stumbled through most of the first four weeks.ddddddddddddThe Chiefs needed a frantic comeback to beat the Chargers in their opener, then failed to score a touchdown in a loss at Houston, before scoring just one offensive TD against the Jets.On Sunday night, the Chiefs didnt reach the end zone until the fourth quarter.Even more damning about the performance? It came a week after the Eagles, led by former Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson, blitzed past Pittsburgh in a 34-3 rout. This one we didnt sustain. We just werent able to sustain drives, Reid said Monday. We had a couple opportunities in the red zone we didnt take advantage of. I have to look in the mirror on that one.Perhaps the only bright spot against Pittsburgh was the return of Jamaal Charles, who tore the ACL in his right knee in Week 5 last season. But the four-time Pro Bowl running back only carried twice and perhaps was pressed into service earlier than desired because of an injury to Charcandrick West.Charles came out of the game healthy, but its unclear what his workload will be like going forward.Well see. Well just play it by ear, Reid said. See how hes feeling and the production and all of those things. Weve got 12 games here to figure that out.Reid said the Chiefs would spend Monday digesting the loss, then cut his players loose for the remainder of the bye week. The NFL has rules about how much they can be in the building during a week off.Still, that doesnt mean the loss wont linger with them. Were 2-2, so its not the end of the world, right? Even though it feels that way, Reid said. We have a week off to step back and analyze and try to fix some of the issues.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: http://twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '

SEVILLE, Spain -- Joaquin Sanchez placed two corner kicks for teammates to head home and give Real Betis a victory in the debut of coach Victor Sanchez on Friday.Joaquins two crosses for first-half goals by defenders Bruno Gonzalez and Aissa Mandi earned the 2-0 win over Las Palmas in Seville.Betis found the weak spot in Las Palmas set-piece defense and Joaquin exploited it with two crisp corner kicks to the near post where Gonzales and Mandi scored from close. We are very happy for the win and to see the team has a clear plan, Gonzales said.Betis hired Sanchez last week to take the team over following its firing of Gus Poyet after four losses in its previous five matches. Sanchez, a former Real Madrid player, had been jobless since he was sacked by Greek club Olympiakos in August after just two months in charge.Sanchez opted for a new five-man defense and it succeeded in limiting Las Palmas attack to a few early threats. The win over Las Palmas lifted Betis into 12th place before the rest of the matches of the 12th round are played.Las Palmas, which has cooled off after a great start to the season, remained in ninth place with only one win in the last eight rounds. We werent sharp today, Las Palmas Vincente Gomez said. We hope we figure this out in time for the next match. On Saturday, leader Real Madrid visits fourth-place Atletico Madrid in a Spanish capital derby, while second-place Barcelona hosts Malaga. Clearing the way to keep four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster, the New York Jets waived two high draft picks from the previous regime -- cornerback Dee Milliner and tight end Jace Amaro?--?league sources said Saturday. The oft-injured Milliner, the ninth overall pick in 2013, struggled in the preseason and missed the last game because of a hamstring injury. Sources said the Jets tried to trade Milliner, who began training camp as the No. 4 cornerback but lost his spot to rookie Juston Burris.Amaro was a second-round pick in 2014 but never lived up to expectations. Determined to rebound after missing 2015 due to shoulder surgery, Amaro got off to a fast start in training camp but he fizzled in the preseason games, failing to capitalize on a wide-open competition at his position.Currently, Kellen Davis and Brandon Bostick are the only tight ends on the roster. The Jets faced tough roster decisions on cut-down day, starting with the quarterback position. They will go into the season with starter Ryan Fitzpatrick, plus backups Geno Smith, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg.Petty bruised his throwing shoulder in the final preseason game, but it wasnt serious enough to warrant injured reserve.Fitzpatrick and Smith will be the only two quartterbacks to dress on game day.ddddddddddddThe last time a team began the season with four quarterbacks was 2013, when the Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings both did it. It has happened only six times over the past decade, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Jets decision came as no surprise, as coach Todd Bowles indicated Friday that Petty would remain on the 53-man roster through the weekend.Milliner, a former Alabama standout, became the latest in a long line of first-round disappointments for the Jets. He showed promised as a rookie, but he missed 27 out of 48 games in his first three seasons. He suffered a myriad of injuries, including a ruptured Achilles tendon and a torn wrist ligament. Counting college, he has undergone at least seven surgeries. The Jets declined to exercise their fifth-year option in the spring, claiming Milliner would be given an opportunity to play and increase his value before free agency. Happy with their other corners, the team started shopping him in camp, finding no takers.Milliners $2.1 million salary is guaranteed, so the Jets dont save any cap room by releasing him. ' ' '

Riot Games then forced Jaafarian to sell Huma.Jaafarian has told former players and staff that he will compensate them using money earned from the sale, according to sources close to those individuals. The deal with Huma was negotiated and finalized by Bang Bang CEO Sasha Brodowski, sources say. Brodowski and Bang Bang are best known in the French esports community as a talent agency, representing League Championship Series players Bora Yellowstar Kim of Fnatic and Steven Hans sama Liv of Misfits. Bang Bang also does marketing work for esports teams Fnatic and HyperGames.Webedia has a history in online media and esports. In 2014, the company acquired a license to operate IGN France and Brazil, alongside American group Ziff Davis. Around the same time, the company began its partnership with esports team Millenium. SANDY, Utah -- Real Salt Lake is in rare territory. Before this season, U.S. Open Cup matches were not synonymous with success for the MLS club. RSL experienced early exits more often than victories in the nations oldest soccer tournament. It has been a completely different story this time around, and Salt Lake took another big step to winning the cup Wednesday night. Alvaro Saborio scored once and assisted on Joao Platas goal to lead RSL to a 2-1 victory over the Portland Timbers. RSL will host DC United in the championship game Oct. 1 after United beat the Chicago Fire 2-0 earlier in the evening. The winner of the final will qualify for a spot in the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League. Salt Lake started on the right foot by attacking relentlessly in the opening moments and it paid off with Saborios goal in the 7th minute. "Scoring early is big for us," RSL coach Jason Kreis said. "We reward ourselves from the momentum that we create at the beginning of the match. It is always important. Weve done a good job of that lately." Khari Stephenson forced a corner kick with a shot from distance to set up the scoring play. Following the corner kick, Kyle Beckerman sent a cross into Saborio on the left side of the 6-yard box. He then redirected a header back toward the right post and the ball bounced off the post and in. "It was a very important goal because we needed to score early," Saborio said. "Kyle gave me a very good cross and I got in a good header." Strong play from Nick Rimando kept Portland from answering in the first half. The Timbers got into scoring position several times, but came away empty after some clutch saves from Rimando. The biggest came in the 40th minute when Will Johnson kicked a right-footer down the centre of the box. It looked like a sure goal, but Rimando managed to poke the ball away with his fingertips at the last minute. "I need to figure out what hes eating so I can eat the same thing," Kreis said. Ryan Johnson had another good chance for Portland when he uncorked a header during first-half stoppage time. The ball bounced off the left post. Portland did all the things it needed to do to be in control by halftime. The Timbers dominated possession. They created more shots and put the RSL defence on its heels more often. But finding the finishing touch was a problem. Still, Portland coach Caleb Porte

SEATTLE -- The Washington Huskies found out that even without their leading scorer, Yale still is a formidable basketball team, especially on the backboards.Miye Oni scored 24 points, Sam Downey added 22 and Yale turned back a furious second-half rally to hold off Washington 98-90 on Sunday in the season opener for both teams.Yale, which made the NCAA tournament last season for the first time since 1972, adjusted quickly to the absence of guard Makai Mason, who sustained a broken foot in a scrimmage with Boston University on Nov. 5 and likely will miss the entire season.I couldnt be more proud of my team. We did what we set out to do, said Yale coach James Jones. We have three values that we work on every day in practice and we did a great job at two of the three, rebounding and sharing the ball, and that was a big difference in the game for us.The Bulldogs, who led 49-35 at the half, outrebounded Washington 42-29, including a 21-4 advantage on the offensive end. Yale also had 20 assists on its 33 field goals and finished with seven turnovers -- just one in the first half.Washington shot 66.7 percent in the second half and battled back within 77-73 on a jumper by highly-touted freshman Markelle Fultz, who finished with 30 points. The Bulldogs pushed the lead to 88-77 on Onis 3-pointer from the left corner with 1:24 left.We point no further than the backboards on our end and their end, said Washington coach Lorenzo Romar. Although we had some defensive breakdowns, I think that tells the story. They scored on 19 points on second-chance rebounds.Washington, which trailed by as many as 20 in the first half, used a 10-2 spurt to pull within 55-47 on David Crisps breakaway jam with 16:29 remaining.Onis layup capped a 15-2 run that put Yale in front 29-11 with 7:48 left in the half. Washington pulled within 38-26 on two free throws by Matisse Thybulle with 2:40 remaining. If you follow Yale, youve got to be impressed with their basketball team and how they go about their business, said Romar, who was celebrating his 58th birthday. They executed very, very well. They had a couple terrific young players, they were patient, they made big shots. They were on the road, but they played with a great deal of poise.BIG PICTUREWashington: With Marquese Chriss and Dejounte Murray both drafted in the first-round of the NBA draft after just one season at Washington, the Huskies have just two players that have been on the roster longer than one season. Sophomore forward Matisse Thybulle is the only returning player who started all 34 games last season.Yale: The Bulldogs are adjusting to life without guard Makai Mason, the teams leading scorer last season. Mason averaged 16 points and 3.8 assists per game last season as a sophomore and was named all-Ivy League. He had a career-high 31 points in the 12th-seeded Bulldogs 79-75 victory over No. 5 seed Baylor in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament.UP NEXTWashington continues its four-game, season-opening stretch at home against Cal State-Fullerton on Thursday.Yale returns from its one-game cross-country trip to face Lehigh at home, where the Bulldogs were 12-0 last season.STAT OF THE NIGHTWashington had an astonishing 15 blocked shots, including six each by Matisse Thybulle and Malik Dime, while Yale did not have a single block.FRESHMAN STANDOUTMarkelle Fultz, a 6-4 guard from Maryland, lived up to his billing with 30 points on 11-for-17 shooting, including 2-of-5 from beyond the arc. He also had seven rebounds and six assists in 36 minutes. However, he missed two crucial free throws with 1:44 left and Washington within 85-77. Black Saints Jerseys . WASHINGTON -- After playing doubles past midnight and getting to sleep at about 3 a.m., Steve Johnson was less than thrilled to be playing in the first Citi Open mens match in the main stadium at 4 p.m. Thursday.Still, showing the sort of progress that has lifted his ranking to a career-high 25th, Johnson played quality first-strike tennis and ended qualifier Ryan Harrisons season-best run by winning the all-American matchup 6-4, 6-4 to reach the hard-court tournaments quarterfinals.I was lucky enough to be on the schedule first today. Just good turnaround, the fifth-seeded Johnson said, his words thick with sarcasm. Got a few hours of sleep. Just get back up. Thats life. Hopefully, the ATP and those guys dont do that much anymore, because I dont think its fair. Its up to those guys. Theyve got to do what theyve got to do.Tournament director Jeff Newman said the scheduling was affected by rain that washed out play earlier in the week and court assignments are based on various factors such as a television perspective, a fan perspective, how the draws are matched up.Every player wants to play in a certain position. You try to take feedback and weigh it all, Newman said. Some players will be happy; some people would prefer other spots.Johnson, a member of the U.S. Olympic team headed to Rio de Janeiro next month, broke Harrison once in each set, did not face a break point himself and ended the match with a 130 mph ace.A two-time NCAA singles champion in 2011 and 2012, and a member of Southern California teams that won four consecutive national titles, Johnson earned his first ATP trophy at Nottingham, England, last month, then backed that up by making his fourth-round debut at a Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon.I knew I was capable always of winning a title -- and, hopefully, multiple titles, Joohnson said.dddddddddddd Once you win it, then you know what it feels like, you know what its like to be serving for a title. You get to those situations a little bit more and you just hopefully become more comfortable. On Friday, Johnson will face top-seeded John Isner, who hit serves at up to 143 mph, produced 16 aces and never faced a break point in a 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory over No. 15 Marcos Baghdatis. This will be the third year in a row that Americans Johnson and Isner meet in Washington; Johnson won in 2014, and Isner did in 2015, both decided by a third-set tiebreaker.Hell tell you this much: He was playing pretty poorly the first five months of the year. Wasnt getting much going. But he turned the corner (in June), Isner said. Hes carried that confidence over to here. Hes just like anyone else: When he gets confidence on his side, he starts going for his shots and his shots start finding the right spots. Also Thursday, No. 2-seeded Gael Monfils overwhelmed No. 16 Borna Coric 6-2, 6-3, No. 13 Ivo Karlovic hit 21 aces and eliminated No. 3 Bernard Tomic 7-6 (4), 6-3, No. 6 Jack Sock beat Dan Evans 6-1, 7-5, No. 7 Alexander Zverev got past Malek Jaziri 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, and No. 8 Sam Querrey took the last five games in a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over 2012 champion Alexandr Dolgopolov. In womens action, third-seeded Monica Puig lost to Lauren Davis 6-4, 6-2, fourth-seeded Kristina Mladenovic beat 2013 Wimbledon runner-up Sabine Lisicki 6-3, 6-3, Risa Ozaki edged Naomi Broady 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, and Camila Giorgi advanced when Tamira Paszek withdrew before their match because of an upper respiratory infection.---Follow Howard Fendrich on Twitter at http://twitter.com/HowardFendrich ' ' '

For the third consecutive year, Cricket South Africa has recorded a financial surplus - effectively a profit - to be ploughed back into the running of the game in the country. The 2015-16 year saw the organisation end R107 million (US$7.4 million) in the black after a high-profile visit from England and the restructuring of their operational model. For the first time, all 14 provincial affiliates turned a profit. CSA has again produced a stellar performance in its operations and finances, CSA president Chris Nenzani said after Saturdays Annual General Meeting. Contributing to this success was the effective running of the Operating Model that was introduced in June 2014 which resulted in all 14 Members returning better than break-even financial results for the first time. The AGM had a significant focus on transformation, after CSA announced in July that they would implement targets on the number of the players of colour in national teams in response to being banned by the countrys sports ministry from bidding for or hosting major events as punishment for the slow progress of transformation. In a briefing earlier in the year, the ministry revealed it expected national teams to be 60% representative, which translates to seven players of colour in an XI. But CSA has not revealed whether they have agreed to this, neither have altered domestic targets which are set at six players of colour in a starting XI of which at least three must be black Africans. However, Nenzani remained critical of the transformation process and explained that CSA was working with the ministry and the Eminent Persons Group that assess transformation efforts for the government to better their results. The very fact that there is a need to set certain targets indicates that the system has not been working optimally to achieve representivity, Nenzani said. We remain in dialogue with the Ministry and the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) in order to find common ground and address those areas where we need to improve. I am confident that our engagements will bear fruits.Nenzanis post was not up for re-election but there were three additions to the board, none of them to the independent member component. Western Province president Beresford Williams was re-elected to the board and Kwa-Zulu Natal and Border presidents Fa-eez Jaffer and Thando Ganda were given first-time roles. Gauteng Crick

Reaction to the death of golf great Arnold Palmer on Sunday at age 87 in Pittsburgh:---Arnold transcended the game of golf. He was more than a golfer or even great golfer. He was an icon. He was a legend. Arnold was someone who was a pioneer in his sport. He took the game from one level to a higher level, virtually by himself. Along the way, he had millions of adoring fans -- Barbara and I among them. We were great competitors, who loved competing against each other, but we were always great friends along the way. Arnold always had my back, and I had his. We were always there for each other. That never changed. He was the king of our sport and always will be. -- Jack Nicklaus---He meant so much to the game and to me personally. I knew that I could always call him for advice, and I looked forward to seeing him at Bay Hill and the Masters. ... It was an honor and privilege to have known Arnold, and Im forever grateful for his friendship. -- Tiger Woods---Heres to The King who was as extraordinary on the links as he was generous to others. Thanks for the memories, Arnold. -- President Barack Obama---Arnold was many things to many people and undoubtedly made golf more popular, but to me he was simply a dear friend for over 60 years. Of course, like anybody we had our differences but these never stood in the way of our relationship and I will miss him terribly. He could be difficult and demanding but also blessed with charisma, charm and patience. ... Muff, I will raise my glass and toast your life tonight my friend, and hope to be reunited for another round together in time. -- Gary Player---Ive respected a number of players who came before me, but Arnold Palmer was my model on and off the course. As an amateur I played my very first practice round at the Masters with him at his invitation. I saw how much time and attention he gave to fans, the media and worthy charitable causes. Im like every other fan of his enormous influence on the game and his great generosity off the course. Im saddened by his death but Im a better player and perhaps a better person thanks to his example. -- Phil Mickelson---You changed the game with your charisma and personality. Every player, me included, should thank you for what you brought to our great game. You had this incredible ability to open the eyes of the world to the beauty of golf. You played with presidents, celebrities and CEOs. In doing so you opened the game to commercialization. For that I thank you. -- Greg Norman---No one has had a greater impact on those who play our great sport or who are touched by it. It has been said many times over in so many ways, but beyond his immense talent, Arnold transcended our sport with an extraordinarily appealing personality and genuineness that connected with millions, truly making him a champion of the people. The fact that his popularity never waned more than a quarter century after his last competitive victory speaks volumes to the man, the icon and tthe legendary figure he was.ddddddddddddMore than his words, Arnolds actions spoke to his unequivocal love of golf and belief that no individual can be or should be bigger than the game. Arnold totally gave of himself to support golf and its growth. He has served as a role model for generations of PGA Tour members in ways large and small. The game, and all of us involved with it, are so much richer for having had the fortune to have Arnold willingly serve as its global champion and ambassador. -- PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem---Arnolds bold and daring approach to the game, combined with his citizenship, warmth, humor, humility and grace, were truly the signature of the man that we came to know, and will fondly remember, as The King. His presence at Augusta National will be sorely missed, but his impact on the Masters remains immeasurable -- and it will never wane. -- Billy Payne, chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament.---Arnold was the folk hero of golf. Not only was he the greatest personality the game has produced, he was King of the fairways every time he played. We were only two weeks apart in age and great rivals. We certainly had some wonderful times together. -- Peter Thomson---Barbara and I mourn The King, Arnie, the peoples champion. He brought golf to millions by his daring and caring. We miss him already. -- former President George H.W. Bush---The world has lost an original, a sports legend, a true gentleman, and a generous and compassionate human being. I have lost a friend. ... I first learned of Arnold Palmer from my father. He was a member of `Arnies Army. He didnt even play golf -- and he loved `The King. -- former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice---Arnold Palmer defined what it is be a professional inside and outside the ropes. All of golf says `thanks Arnold. -- Peter Jacobsen---Legends never die ... you will live on forever Arnie ... I will never forget the bear hug in front of the clubhouse at Augusta, to watching you hit your final tee shot there, and to spending time with you in the locker room at Bay Hill ... thank you for being you and giving me the opportunity to do what I get to do every day! I Love you as did everyone. RIP The KING!! -- Rickie Fowler---Without question Arnolds participation in The Open Championship in the early 1960s was the catalyst to truly internationalize golf. The fact he was loved and recognized by everyone across the globe, whether they be fans of golf or not, is testament to his charismatic legacy that will live on. -- European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley---The Legends of all Legends in the game of golf! RIP my friend, always loved u and always will! God Bless my Friend! (hash)AP -- John Daly---Im one of the fortunate folks to have spent time with the King. HOUSTON -- Grambling State running back Martez Carter had to remind himself of advice he frequently hears from Tigers coach Broderick Fobbs.Coach always preaches that anytime you make a mistake, it happens for a reason, and you have to have a short-term memory, Carter said.Carter rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown and used a dominant second half to help Grambling State overcome a 17-point halftime deficit and Alcorn State 27-20 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday at NRG Stadium.Late in the fourth quarter, Carter was nearly in the end zone when an Alcorn State defender knocked the ball loose on the 2-yard line. Luckily for Carter and the Tigers, receiver Dominique Leake was in the perfect place to catch the fumble in midair and step into the end zone to tie the game at 20.Like coach says, every mistake happens for a reason. After a blocked extra-point attempt by Alcorn State, Carter used his short-term memory to put the fumble behind him and scamper into the end zone on a 31-yard touchdown run with less than four minutes remaining to give Grambling State (10-1) its first lead of the game.Grambling State cornerback Jameel Jackson intercepted a pass at midfield with three minutes left to secure the win.The game was a rematch of the 2015 SWAC title game, which Alcorn State won 49-21. The Tigers won their first SWAC championship since 2011 and 24th conference title in school history, the most in the conference. They put us in a bind and dominated us in the first half, but our kids continued to fight, Fobbs said. We scrambled and made some plays and got some key stops, defensively, and were able to come away with the victory. After dominating the SWAC in an undefeated run in the regular season, the Tigers found themselves in unfamiliar territory at halftime as they trailed 17-0.Once we came in the halftime locker room and saw how everybody had the same mindset, I wasnt worried at all, Grambling State quarterback Devante Kincade said. I was ready to get back on the field.Kincade threw for 237 yards and two touchdowns on 15 of 22 passing despite eight sacks.Alcorn State (5-6) got 126 yards rushing and a touchdown from DeLance Turner, who had 16 carries. We gave up big plays and those kinds of things hurt, Alcorn State head coach Fred McNair said. Its just the way it happened and thats the way that second half played out, unfortunately.McNair, who was promoted from quarterbacks coach in February after previous head coach Jay Hopson left for Southern Mississippi, guided his team past a rocky 1/3 start to return to the conference championship game. McNair is the brother of the late NFL quarterback and Alcorn State legend Steve McNair.Grambling State will face North Carolina A&T in the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl on Dec. 17 in Atlanta, the same opponent that beat Alcorn State in the same game 41-34 a year ago.THE TAKEAWAYGRAMBLING STATE: The Tigers dominated the SWAC in the regular season, winning by an average margin of 31.7 points but had to overcome a sluggish first-half start to finish the regular season undefeated in conference play.ALCORN STATE: The Braves dominated the first half and led by three scores at the break before losing momentum early in the third quarter and the lead in the fourth quarter.EMERGENCY KICKERAfter Grambling State kicker/punter Jonathan Wallace was injured on a punting play, he was unable to resume his duties as kicker. Fobbs turned to CB Abubakkar Conteh, who had never previously kicked for the Tigers and the team only recently found out played soccer in high school in Canada. With the exception of the blocked extra-point attempt on a bad snap, Conteh delivered, converting two extra points and handling kickoff duties.RUSHING TO CONCLUSIONSAlcorn State won in its two previous trips to the SWAC title game by dominating the ground game. The Braves more than doubled their opponents rushing yard totals in the previous two victories and were on their way to a similar feat on Saturday, leading the rushing total by a wide margin of 173-96 at the half. In the second half, however, Grambling State outgained Alcorn State 79-16, a key turnaround that ultimately flipped the game.PENALTIES GALOREMcNair acknowledged that committing 15 penalties for 134 yards was a major factor in Alcorn States loss of the early lead. Nine of those penalties for 82 yards were committed in the first half. Comparatively, Grambling State committed 10 penalties for 95 yards.UP NEXTGRAMBLING STATE: The Tigers will represent the SWAC in the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl on Dec. 17 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, taking on North Carolina A&T out of the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference.ALCORN STATE: The Braves are expected to return most of their starters on offense in 2017, including QB Lenorris Footman and Turner, and graduate just three starters on defense. NEW YORK -- Chris Kreider proudly wore the Broadway Hat in the victorious New York Rangers dressing room as he tried to describe the feeling of saving his teams season. Kreider deftly steered in a pass from Rick Nash 7:03 into overtime, and the Rangers stayed alive in the Stanley Cup playoffs with a 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night. "It is so surreal," the 22-year-old Kreider said. "Its not something that can really be explained. It is something that just has to be felt, but it was awesome. Im just excited to give these guys an opportunity to play another game. "There is no quit in this room." New York, which erased 2-0 and 3-2 deficits, still trails the Eastern Conference semifinal series 3-1. The Rangers will need to win again on Saturday in Boston to force a Game 6 back in Madison Square Garden. The Rangers, who were outshot 40-32, won a faceoff deep in their zone, and Nash rushed the puck up ice. He stopped above the right circle and fed a hard pass in front that Kreider skated into and tipped past goalie Tuukka Rask for his first of the playoffs. New York, 0-3 in overtime in these playoffs, was eliminated from the conference finals last year by New Jersey in extra time in Game 6. "It is time for us to win an overtime game," Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist said. "This was a big one. It was such a great feeling to see that puck go in." Kreider, who made his NHL debut in last years playoffs, has six career post-season goals in just 25 games. "I was lucky enough to play with Rick," Kreider said. "Just trying to go hard to the net. Hes such a talented player. He was able to find my tape, and I tried to put it on net." Derek Stepan and Brian Boyle scored tying goals in the third period for the Rangers, who even found success on the power play. Carl Hagelin netted New Yorks first goal of the game in the second period. Lundqvist made 37 saves for New York, which managed only five goals total in the first three games against Boston. Boston got second-period goals from Nathan Horton and rising star Torey Krug to build an early lead. Tyler Seguins first of the playoffs put the Bruins back on top 3-2 in the third. Only three teams have lost a series after leading 3-0, but the Bruins are the most recent to do it in 2010 against Philadelphia. "Its a resilient group," Kreider said. "The tone of the dressing room was the same as positive and upbeat. Were excited to play more hockey." One more win will put Boston back into the conference finals for the second time in three years. The Bruins gave up a 3-1 lead to Toronto in the first round before rallying in Game 7 to advance. "There is no panic here," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "We have to go back home and play a better game." Stepan got New York even at 2 just 1:15 into the third after a dump-in. Rask went behind the net to slow the puck down for defenceman Zdeno Chara, but Stepan forced a turnover when he surprised Chara from behind. Stepan gathered the puck, came around in front and tucked the puck inside the left post for his team-leading fourth of the playoffs. "We made some mistakes tonight, mistakes we havent been making, mistakes you cant have, and they capitalized on them," Chara said. "They made us pay. "These nights are going to happen. They played to win, and we didnt match their intensity at times." The Bruins made the most of another power play andd took a 3-2 lead just 2 seconds after a goalie interference penalty against Ryan McDonagh expired.dddddddddddd Seguin got to his own rebound in close and shoved a shot past Lundqvist at 8:06. However, the Rangers still wouldnt go away and they finally connected on the power play for the first time in the series and the third time in 41 man-advantages this post-season. Boyle took a pass from Stepan in the slot and snapped a drive that nestled into the middle of the net at 10:00 after the Bruins were caught with too many men on the ice. New York coach John Tortorella made desperate moves with his lineup, hoping to find some chemistry to spark his club. Tortorella benched star centre Brad Richards, who had just one goal in the playoffs, and rugged forward Arron Asham in favour of seldom-used Kris Newbury and Micheal Haley. "By no means is this a situation where I take him out and Im blaming him," Tortorella said of Richards. "I need to make decisions about what I feel is right for our team to win tonights game, and thats why I made that decision." Veteran Roman Hamrlik also played for the first time in these playoffs in place of injured defenceman Anton Stralman, who left Game 3 in the second period. The Bruins used their power play to grab control in the second period, connecting twice in a span of 3:02 to take a 2-0 lead. After Newbury was sent off for goalie interference, when he knocked down Rask, Horton got the scoring going. He tried to feed a pass from the bottom of the left circle into the slot, but the puck hit Rangers defenceman Michael Del Zotto and bounced back to Horton. This time, Horton let a shot go that struck the inside of Lundqvists left leg and caromed in at 4:39. Lundqvist blocked a hard shot by Chara, who rattled a drive off of the goalies mask. At the next stoppage, there was a brief delay as Lundqvist had repairs made. Del Zotto took an interference penalty 1:25 after Boston took the lead, and Krug made the Rangers pay again. Krug, a rookie defenceman who made his NHL post-season debut in the series opener, fired a slap shot from the Stanley Cup logo in the Rangers zone that sailed past Lundqvist and into the top right corner at 7:41. Krug has scored in three of the four games he has played in this series, and his goal gave Boston as many power-play tallies at Madison Square Garden in this playoff year as the host Rangers had mustered to that point. However, New York got a big break just 54 seconds later to cut the deficit in half. As the Rangers were moving the puck up ice, Rask stumbled in the crease and fell at around the same time that Hagelin was backhanding a shot on net. Sliding as slowly as possible, the puck eluded Rask as he tried to recover in time to stop it. "We need to be more focused, I need to be more focused," Rask said. "I just took a step to the side in what I think probably was a skate mark or something. I lost my balance and the rest is history. "We gave them a couple of gifts and it cost us the game." It took nearly seven minutes before New York recorded its first shot on Rask -- a drive by defenceman John Moore -- and Boston controlled the period with a 12-4 edge in shots. NOTES: The Rangers are 5-6 in Game 4 when trailing 3-0. ... Before Game 1, the Rangers and Bruins hadnt gone to overtime against each other in the playoffs since March 27, 1958. ... Kreider, who made his regular-season debut against Boston on Jan. 19, had two goals in 23 games this season. ' ' '

There is an air of quiet satisfaction at Chelmsford, the morning after Essex sealed their return to the top division of the Championship. Chris Silverwood, the head coach, is in great demand, while club legends such as Graham Gooch, John Lever and Nasser Hussain can be spotted on their peregrinations, shaking hands and exchanging nods. Former captain Brian Tonker Taylor, at the venerable age of 84, was said to have commandeered a taxi to come to the ground. The players had been allowed a minor knees up the night before, sitting on the team balcony and belting out a few numbers, although celebrations will begin in earnest at the conclusion of their match against Glamorgan - and possibly once again after the presentation of the Division Two trophy at Canterbury next week. Promotion secure, the hard work done, Essex are heading in the right direction again. As Hussain jokingly puts it: The home of cricket is back.It will take a lot more hard work for them to stay in Division One, not that anybody here is about to dispute that. Essex have been promoted on three occasions since two divisions were instated only to be relegated immediately each time. But ambitions have been awakened - I dont just want to compete up there, I want to beat people, Silverwood says - and the planning to avert a similar fate next year begins almost straight away.I like dreaming, Silverwood says, the twinkle in his eye discernible despite the presence of shades. I say to the guys, dream and dream big and have the courage to chase it. Thats what were doing out there. The dream of playing for England, the dream of winning trophies and being successful. Lets chase it, lets have a go.Even as the T20 debate seemingly takes a decisive twist away from the smaller counties, Essex have found that the Championship is the stuff that dreams are made on. They are not ready for a rude awakening.Silverwood and his four-day captain, Ryan ten Doeschate, have enjoyed success at the first time of asking, pulling together a dressing room that had a reputation for failing to deliver despite a truckload of talent. Having been assistant coach under his predecessor, Paul Grayson, Silverwood had first-hand experience of seeing Essex stumble - and he remains disappointed by two more quarter-final defeats in this seasons limited-overs competitions - but he did not believe that major changes were required.I was very much a part of that era, working under Paul and Ill always be grateful to him for giving me that opportunity in county cricket. The time was right, we put a structure in place and everybody bought into it - partnerships with bat and ball, little targets, achievable goals - if we do this, this is where well end up.The tone was set by ten Doeschates decision to skip the IPL and commit himself to a full season of Championship cricket. It may not have been the glamorous decision but passing 1000 first-class runs in a campaign for the first time was rich reward. Define glamour, Silverwood grins knowingly.Taking each game as it comes and creating the right environment for players to excel in are sporting clichés but that does not necessarily neutralise their effectiveness. Ten Doeschate chose to focuse on the teams efforts after he had hit the run to secure promotion on Tuesday evening and Silverwood pushes a similar philosophy. The Yorkshire dressing room that I grew up in was very much about the team first, he says. With 18 Championship hundreds, shared between eight different players, and 10 five-wicket hauls, Essex have at last parlayed collective bargaining power into a season of compelling cricket. Alastair Cook, who arrived to take part in the celebrations, chipped in whenever England would let him, while the names of the key contributors - ten Doeschate, Graham Napier, Tom Westley, Nick Browne, James Foster, Jamie Porter, David Masters - inspire wide-ranging affection among the clubs passionate (and occasionally belligerent) support base.At any given point someone has dug deep, Silverwood says. Cooky dug deep for us at Sussex, Dan Lawrence dug deep for us at Leicester, when we were in trouble there - no one would have backed us to get the score we did after being 68 for 5. But again the confidence comes through from processes put in place, and playing on better wickets, really, allowing the batsmen to score a weight of runs which the bowlers can then use as scoreboard pressure to put other teams under the pump.It is perhaps ironic that the change to the toss regulations this year has helped Essex to come up with a promotion-winning strategy. Jesse Ryders two seasons of menacing visiting batsmen at Chelmsford were considered to be one of the reasons the ECB instigated change but Silverwood has been all in favour, with Essex posting big totals and then working through opponents with a battery of varied seamers. That will be harder to do in Division One, all the more so due to the retirements of Napier (confirmed) and Masters (expected). Mohammad Amir has been mooted as a potential overseas signing - Hes a good bowler, who wouldnt want him? Silverwood says - and a top-class spinner would also be a useful addition. Essex have barely employed spin this year - Westley, Lawrence and Ashar Zaidi have bowled less than 150 overs between them - with few Division Two sides having produced turning pitches but the situation in the top tier has been markedly different. These will be the topics under discussion between Silverwood and ten Doeschate, not to mention Ronnie Irani, the chairman of the cricket committee who Silverwood says he speaks to most days. Irani may have been occasionally divisive as a player - and his return last year also caused ructions - but Essex have forged a strong sense of common identity over the last 12 months. Where previous seasons have seen promising players depart for challenges elsewhere, this time they are coming back: Varun Chopra and Adam Wheater already re-signed to add some Division One steel. They wanted to come back to Essex because they can see what were trying to achieve, Silverwood says. Theyve seen the potential and theyre excited and want to be part of it. A few years ago the club was criticised because people were leaving us - well, I think we need praising now, because people want to come back. And I find that really exciting because an Essex boy in an Essex shirt will push hard for Essex because thats his county.Theres a hint of Yorkshire about this, too, though Essex, home to Englands two greatest Test run-makers, has a reputation of its own to polish. Silverwood, who is among Andy Flowers burgeoning network of Lions coaches, might also be on the radar at his home county - where there will be a significant vacancy opening up shortly - but he stresses that his current goal is beating Yorkshire rather than joining them. I would love to take the big boys down, he smiles, looking ahead to next season. Essex wont have to wait much longer for their chance. HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros dont have enough time for their bats to go quiet like they did Thursday night.Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Ricky Nolasco pitched seven solid innings, helping the Los Angeles Angels hinder the Astros wild-card hopes with a 2-0 victory. The Angels ended an 11-game skid and pushed Houston 1 1/2 game behind the Tigers for the second AL wild card. Were not perfect, Houston manager A.J. Hinch said. I dont know if anybody is going to run the table, and I think losses anytime of the year hurt. These obviously hurt when youre glued to whats going on.Pujols homered into the Crawford Boxes in left field, helping Los Angeles move to 2-11 against the Astros this season. Its nice to win, Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said. We have played some tough games. Those guys have had our number. Theyre a tough team. They have played well against us, but we are going to keep playing hard.Nolasco (7-14) gave up five singles and struck out five. He did not allow a baserunner past second. Nolasco had a second straight scoreless start after throwing six shutout innings Saturday against Toronto.I was spinning the ball pretty good, Nolasco said. I thought I was feeling the strike zone for the most part. I was challenging with fastballs when I had to. I was pitching off some good breaking balls to keep them off balanced.JC Ramirez pitched the eighth before Andrew Bailey pitched the ninth for his fifth save.Mike Fiers (11-8) allowed two runs and four hits with a season-high nine strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. We knew in April losing to any team in our division was a big loss, Fiers said. Obviously coming down here in September it seems bigger but its one game. The right-hander retired 13 straight at one point. Fiers had his second straight strong outing after throwing six scoreless innings Saturday in Seattle.Just came out of the gate slow and made too many mistakes in the first inning, Fiers said. Pujols capitalized on a first-pitch fastball and after that I settled inn and got my pitches working and kept them off-balance for the most part.ddddddddddddJose Altuve had three hits for Houston, which grounded into three double plays. We couldnt piece an inning together where we had multiple hits in a row or multiple baserunners, Hinch said. There was always something in the way either too late after a couple outs or starting something up with two outs and then them making a big pitch at the right time.TRAINERS ROOMAngels: LHP Tyler Skaggs (left forearm tightness) played catch and will throw some bullpens in the coming week. Hes symptom free, but we are going to obviously be very conservative where his treatment is now to make sure that this doesnt re-occur or turn into anything bigger, Scioscia said. Right now he feels great.Astros: RHP Lance McCullers, who has been out since Aug. 2 with a mild right elbow strain, threw a full bullpen Thursday. McCullers was pain free and will have another bullpen in a few days.BROWN RETIRESHouston Astros TV play-by-play announcer Bill Brown will retire this month. The 69-year-old Browns final scheduled broadcast will be the last regular season home game, Sept. 28 against the Mariners. Brown started with the Astros in 1987 and has called games for them for nearly 30 years.PUJOLS MOVING UP THE CHARTSPujols two RBI broke a tie with Frank Robinson for 20th on the career list. His 116 RBI this season are his most since driving in 118 in 2010. The home run was Pujols 53rd against the Astros.UP NEXTAngels: RHP Alex Meyer (1-3, 5.63) will make his fifth start of the season and fourth for the Angels on Friday. Meyer earned his first career win in his last start Sunday, tossing five shutout innings against Toronto.Astros: RHP Doug Fister (12-12, 4.45) will make his 31st start of the season Friday, looking to snap a four-game losing streak. Fister allowed seven runs in less than four innings Sunday at Seattle. ' ' '

NAPA, Calif. -- Raiders defensive back DJ Hayden knows his NFL career might already be at a crossroads after just three seasons. That point was driven home emphatically in the offseason when the team made multiple changes to the secondary, bringing in veteran Sean Smith to pair with David Amerson as the starting cornerbacks. The Raiders also declined to pick up the fifth-year option on Haydens contract, meaning that -- barring a change from Oaklands front office -- the 12th overall pick in the 2013 draft will go into the offseason next year as a free agent. Not that Hayden seems bothered by it one way or the other. The 26-year-old reported to training camp leaner and more muscular as he transitions from playing on the outside to defending the slot receiver. The move has gone smoothly so far, too, as Hayden intercepted a pass from quarterback Matt McGloin and returned it for a touchdown on Saturday then made a nice play to break up a deep throw from Derek Carr on Sunday.I feel like Im more confident, Hayden said Sunday. Its my fourth year, its about time I made some plays. I want to score some touchdowns. Pretty confident I will.Hayden has struggled to live up to expectations after becoming the first first-round pick by Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie.Hayden came out of college having survived a near-fatal heart injury, was plagued by injuries that limited him to 18 games over his first two seasons and has just three interceptions.Last season, Hayden started 13 games, played in all 16 and had a career-best 70 tackles. Now hes moving inside after spending time there last season as the Raiders nickel back while Smith and Amerson start at cornerback.Inside, you have to kind of come at it at a different approach because (receivers have) got so much field to work with, Hayden said. But its pretty much the same thing. `Thats your guy, cover him. I like it, I like it a lot.The Raiders held their first fully padded practice of training camp Sunday and Hayden stood out with his play to break up the pass from Carr.A small step, to be sure, but a signficant one for Hayden. His confidence is really high, Raiders second-year defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. He loves what hes doing. We have competition across the board and hes a competitor so hes fitting right in and competing every day.The challenge for Hayden isnt so much about transitioning to a new position. Its in convincing the coaching staff -- and perhaps other teams around the NFL -- that he can play, and play well, no matter where he lines up.We have a lot of film, a lot of evaluating but hes a really good football player and he really wants to be good, Norton said. Theres really nothing stopping him. Hes a guy that we really see as a guy thats really going to excel this year.Hayden has been one of the few constants in a secondary that has undergone sweeping changes almost every year since McKenzie was hired as general manager in 2012. One of the biggest changes this year has been adjusting to the absence of safety Charles Woodson, who retired last year after 17 NFL seasons. You cant replace Charles Woodson, but we can pick up the slack, Hayden said. Were going to have to because hes not here anymore. Its next man up.Game notes Kelechi Osemele was held out of practice for undisclosed reasons, but coach Jack Del Rio said he expects the veteran left guard to be back on Monday. ... Australian cricket is bracing for a grim week as the New South Wales Coroners Court holds a public inquest into the circumstances surrounding the blow that killed Phillip Hughes in a Sheffield Shield match at the SCG in November 2014.Players on the field at the time of the incident, including the likes of Brad Haddin and bowler Sean Abbott, are expected to be among witnesses called to speak. The Hughes family is also expected to be present at the inquest.Hughes death has already been the subject of a Cricket Australia-commissioned review, which found that no amount of increased head protection could have changed the course of events. However that review steered clear of issues surrounding the bowling of bouncers and the laws of the game, lines of enquiry expected to be pursued this week. The State Coroner will examine the manner and cause of death, a spokesperson for NSW Coroners Court said. He also has jurisdiction under section 82 of the Coroners Act 2009 (NSW) to make recommendations, particularly in the interest of public health and safety. Some of the issues that will be examined include how the fatal injury occurred, the nature of play and whether it exacerbated the risk of injjury and whether or not a protective helmet would have minimised the risk of Phillip Hughes dying.dddddddddddd It will also examine emergency planning and response, as well as training. At this stage, the State Coroner has not decided whether findings will be handed down at the end of next week. When the CA review, conducted by David Curtain QC, was handed down, CA chief executive James Sutherland explained how his terms of reference had been limited in order to preserve the fabric of the game.Youll see in the brief terms of reference we gave David Curtain that we needed to draw a line about the laws of the game and to have some perspective around that, Sutherland said. You can make the game of cricket a lot safer by playing with a tennis ball, but thats not how Test cricket has been played and it would obviously be a very different game. Were not wanting to go there, but we do need to find the right balance in the circumstances to not compromise the way the games played and not compromise the way in which the players are best equipped to show their skills. D-Day looms for the Parramatta board on Tuesday. The Parramatta Leagues Club board could be sacked when the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority board meets at a special meeting at 2pm to decide its fate.NSW deputy premier Troy Grant asked for the meeting to be convened after expressing deep concerns about the NRL club and its direction in the wake of the salary cap saga.Grant has the power to sack the leagues club board and appoint an independent administrator if he receives advice from the ILGA and it will have a powerful flow-on effect for the Eels football club board.By sacking the leagues club board, he will effectively remove the football club board as well. The two boards are mirrors of each other, sharing the same seven directors.Directors must sit on the leagues club board to be on the other. If the leagues club board is sacked, its unclear as to how a new football club board would be selected, though its likely the administrator would work with the NRL to put a replacement in place.Grant said he had reluctantly got involved after it became clear the board was dysfunctional and said it was up to the grown ups to step in and sort it out.Eels chairman Steve Sharp, board members Geoff Gerard and Peter Serraro have expressed their readiness to fall on their swords and their support for Grants attempt to appoint an administrator.Sharp on Saturday said in a statement that it was impossible for the board to be effective and offered to step down.Sharp and Serraro are a part of the so-called Gang of Five administrators who were banned by the NRL in the wake of the salary cap saga. The club has flagged its intention to appeal some of the sanctions handed down by the NRL, including the $1 million and the loss of 12 competition points. The Gang of Five have until Wednesday to lodge an appeal over their sanctions.
